How to form your Musical Theatre opinions

Watch Musicals

Make a list of all the musicals you’d like to watch, and even ones that you are unsure about.

This is the key

Because even though you may not think that you would like it, you don’t actually know until you watch it.

There have been musicals that I haven’t watched because of what I heard about it.

And some things were legitimate, such as suspecting that it will conflict with my values.

Now that I have actually watched it, I will know whether it does or doesn’t.

So, now if I am in a conversation about the particular musical, I can give my opinion on the topic from my perspective.

Listen to Cast Recordings

If you have looked online for the musicals to watch there will most often be a cast recording where you can at least get a grasp of the song style of the musical.

This sometimes poses an issue with understanding each character plot, but you can at least find out whether the songs fit your ‘vibe’

Great standalone music

And on that note, some musicals are simply nice to listen to on long car rides, or when you are working.

I have found that I gravitate to listening to particular soundtracks again and again.

Working out to a good soundtrack is the best way to hype you up for exercise.

Discuss with friends

Having discussions with fellow musical theatre lovers can give you great insight into the different aspects of musicals.

More often then not they will have a favourite musical for one reason or another.

Ask “why?”

Through these discussions you can find out whether you sit on the same side of the fence with the opinions.

Quick Comparison

Now I though it might be fun to have a quick comparison of certain aspects on musicals for you to ask yourself.

This may help you to hone in on your opinions.

Music style

Shrek vs Les Misérables

Newsies vs Phantom of the Opera

If you have chosen the second option for these it might mean that you like the more contemporary musicals.

Movement

Chorus Line vs Dear Evan Hansen

An American in Paris vs Beauty and the Beast

If you chose the first options, perhaps you gravitate to musicals that are more dance based/orientated.

Vibe/Costuming

Hairspray vs Fiddler on the Roof

Seussical vs Come From Away

If you prefer the first options, then perhaps you are more drawn to flashy bright costumes/musicals.

Or, maybe you prefer the older historical style of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.

Or possibly the simplistic transformative costumes of ‘Come From Away’.

Topics/Stakes

Waitress vs Les Misérables

Singing in the Rain vs The King and I

If you prefer the first options, then perhaps you prefer more light hearted and smaller challenging issues/events for the character’s world to tackle.

Whereas, the second options are deeper and have possibly more stakes or gravity to the stories.

Don’t get swept up in what other people say they like.

You are unique, and so also are your opinions.
