Should I Pursue ACTING/MUSICAL THEATRE Full Time?

  1. What do you add to the world or to the people around you?

Figure out how you can serve in that field.

Yes, it may be a passion of yours to perform-but it needs to be more than that.

If you go through your life only looking at what you can do for yourself, and how your career benefits you, then I think you are missing the point.

Take a moment to think about where you can make a difference.

Do you have a passion for mental health, kids, teens, environmental issues, etc find where you can make a difference?

2. Do you have what it takes?

Are you resilient, organised, determined, hard working?

If you struggle with any of these it doesn’t mean that you won’t make it or that you can’t do it. But you just need to be honest with yourself about how tough it is most likely going to be.

In musical theatre you have to be an athlete.

This means getting up early even when you don’t feel like it. Turning up to classes on days you lack motivation. I myself was unaware at how fit and strong I needed to be to do this.

Hours and hours of work on not only strength, but on dance technique, singing technique (taking voice lessons, practicing songs), acting techniques, and so much more.

You can’t go in thinking you are taking the easy route. But, it is definitely possible!

3. What part of previous jobs/gigs you have enjoyed?

If you have done previous musicals or acting jobs before- did the performing, or the interaction with cast and crew, or costumes, tech behind the scenes part give you the most joy.

Knowing whether being the performer or being in the industry, is an important question.

Can you achieve this enjoyment without making acting your career?

4. Are you willing to improve?

It takes a lot of hard work!

If you want to go into acting, you have to grow yourself as a brand, find agents and put in a lot of work.

Acting is a skill that you need to rehearse and refine.

5. Is there another career that you could do?

This is a question I have heard a lot. If there is something else you can do. Do it!

Even if you end up moving back to an acting career, you have some valuable life experiences under your belt.

These unique experiences can mature you as a performer and set you apart from everyone else!

6. Does it sound appealing to you?

Read honest biographies of actors lives.

After hearing their perspectives on being in the arts industry, is it still worth it? If yes, then give it a go!
